Anti-Bullying Learning and Teaching Resource (ALTER)
This short clip called, Fix You, is a message created by The Diocese of Wollongong Catholic Education Office's Student Anti-Bullying Policy, launched in 2013, to target the youth, in response to the growing concern in schools relating to Bullying. This video refers to sensitive issues such as eating disorders, same sex attraction and in particular the increasing use of digital technologies and social media to continue bullying outside of school. ALTER responds to the data presented in this website and in the video, reflecting the growing epidemic of bullying within our schools and the harmful effects this behaviour can have on children. It was designed to assist the Students Anti Bullying policy as support for the implementation of specific initiatives, created to promote pastoral care, well-being and safe school communities. ALTER provides an anti-bullying resource to support staff in Diocesan schools comprised of information and strategies for teachers, which can be incorporated into Stage 3, 4 and 5 of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education learning and teaching program. If you would like to order the full resource package please contact Gail Tarrant at [email protected]. Please Note: This resource is available to Australian schools only under the APRA/AMCOS Educational Licence. Bullying: No Way (2012) is a website constructed by a collaboration between Education Queensland and the school authorities from the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments and Catholic and Independent sectors. The aim of the website is to support Australian school communities to develop active learning environments where each individual and community member feels welcomed, safe, supported, valued and free from bullying and any harm to their lives (Australian Education Authorities, 2012). The website is appealing to all as it has individual portals tailored to students, young children, teachers and parents to access valuable information, details on events news and competitions, teaching and learning resources, games and strategies against bullying. One of the pages I find especially rewarding on this site is the Parents Portal. This page provides parents with detailed information relating to what the act of bullying is and how parents can recognise the associated behaviour. The information provided on the site is an essential tool as many families are unaware of the actual definition of what bullying is and how to identify the signs or behavioural changes associated with their child either identifying as the bully or the victim (Mishna, Pepler & Wiener, 2008). The website is a fantastic resource and it is one which I will be utilising as an educator and referring to parent, educators, students and families who may be experiencing these types of issues associated with bullying.
